FIRST EDITION. Oblong folio (35 x 45 cm). Title page; engraved dedication to Louis XIV of France; publisher’s dedication; 7 unnumbered engraved diagrams of Trajan’s Column; 119 numbered engraved plates; 14 pp. of text description by Alfonso Chacón and 2 pp. of index. Richly inked impressions on laid paper, with various watermarks; the majority of the plates with Paschal Lamb within a circle surmounted by letter ‘A’ and the letter ‘N’ underneath [cf. Corpus Chartarum Fabriano, dated to 1667]. Wide margins; minor foxing on margins and surface dirt; creases to text pages in closing. Ink manuscript inscriptions of previous owners (see provenance below). 18th century mottled calf; gilt decoration to cover; marbled endpapers; sympathetically rebacked, bumped and scuffed; spine in raised compartments with gilt black label and gilt title; upper cover beginning to start. An excellent copy.
