Small octavo; 100 ff.; contemporary stiff velum, blind ruled blind stamped central ornament, lacking ties, spine also blind stamped, well preserved, only minor rubbing and curling at corners, all edges gilt, worn. A total of 60 engravings, including title page and the called for 39 accompanied by Latin and French captions, with an unheard of 21 additional illustrations at the end of the volume, without accompanying text. Engravings by Michael Snyders, some based on drawings by Gillis van Schoor.

First edition of this bilingual French-Latin emblem book, with numerous engravings and short bible verses or aphorisms on the morality of divine and profane love, and its effects. The images present unusual depictions of love in all its forms.

This was a popular publication which received many posterior editions; however, this first edition is unheard of in having such a high number of added plates. A curious and charming little book profusely illustrated on the subject of love.
