8vo. x [2] 483 p., with frontispiece showing picture of Egdon Heath, protected by tissue guard, and map of the Wessex of the Novels and Poems at the end of the volume followed by a final leaf of catalogue of the Wessex edition of Thomas Hardy’s works  published by Macmillan. Half-title and Title in red and black. This is volume 4 ( The Prose of Hardy). Signed in red pen by British author John Symonds on recto of front free endpaper and later inscribed in black underneath: “I’ve had this book for many years but only today, 24th April 1977,did I begin to read it. John Symonds”. Also, first chapter underlined and annotated in red and black pen by Symonds. Deckled edges, upper hinge cracked, showing netting, but spine is still quite tight. Bound in maroon buckram over boards with tooling and lettering to spine. A nice copy
